Rebecca’s Path to a Career in Construction
by CityLink Center | August 7, 2019
“I was so sick of going in circles and putting my life on pause,” shared Rebecca, a recent graduate of the Cornerstone Construction Training Program. Rebecca first started her journey at CityLink in January of 2018 in CEO, a program designed for individuals who have recently been released from prison find employment. From there, she took advantage of financial education workshops and financial counseling through SmartMoney. Over the course of a year, she got back up on her feet and experienced much greater stability. At that point, she felt like she was in a place where she could take on more. “I was thankful to have a job, but what I really wanted was a career.” In faith, she decided to begin the Construction Training Program.
Throughout the twenty-day pilot program, students worked through the NCCER Core Curriculum—which includes modules on basic safety, communication skills and an introduction to construction drawings—, earned their OSHA-10 and NCCER Core Curriculum certifications, and completed workforce readiness and financial education courses. In addition, they attended construction math classes, taught by Cincinnati Public Schools, ensuring all students were prepared for the calculations and measurements required in the field.
“Turns out I had put my foot in my mouth when I had talked about wanting more. It was intense,” she confessed. Throughout the first three weeks of the program, Rebecca continued to work third shift, 4:00pm to 4:00am, Monday through Thursday, which left her little time to sleep before the 8am start to class each day at CityLink. “It was not easy, but God got me through it. There was a voice in my head telling me I had to keep going. I knew I couldn’t quit. I was tired of quitting.”
Upon graduation, Rebecca accepted a job offer at A&A Wall Systems Inc, where she’s currently working. “This feeling of accomplishment is just incredible. I just have to thank God,” she said with tears in her eyes; “I know I wouldn’t have made it without him. He’s been guiding me this whole time. I don’t deserve any of it. I know I don’t. All glory to Him.” We are so proud of Rebecca and her tremendous perseverance.
